Wildlife by month

May

To attract bees, butterflies and birds to your garden in early summer, follow the below tips:

  • Grow wild, leave a corner of your garden to grow wild and you'll soon have a mini-meadow teeming with life.
  • Build a log pile in a quiet corner to attract insects, fungi, frogs and hedgehogs.
  • Grow organic, if you stop using pesticides and herbicides this will encourage wildlife to your garden. If you leave the aphids the ladybirds will have something to eat!
  • Planting trees and shrubs is one of the best ways to attract wildlife.
  • Just add water, create a wet area or small pond, if you have space, and plant with native species. Even a birdbath or upturned pot lid will attract wildlife.
  • Avoid using peat, peat comes from rare and threatened wild habitats. There are now good quality peat free composts widely available.
