Background The park is spilt in two sections; playing fields to the east and a play area to the west, locally known as Moredun Maize.
History and heritage The land which Fernieside Recreation Ground occupies was previously part of the Fernieside House/Mains estate. All that now remains of this are the boundary walls, entrance pillars and the Gardener’s Cottage (also referred to as the North Lodge on some historical maps) at the south western end (Moredun Maize). Using aerial maps from the 1940s, it can be seen that the ground surrounding this small structure is being used for small scale agriculture or as a substantial garden/allotment for the main house. The flat area at Moredun Maize has also been used as a bowling green several times over the decades.
