Working Together for a Greener Currie

Stephen McGregor, local councillors and residents at a meeting

As part of the Thriving Green Spaces project, work has been underway in Currie to help improve local greenspaces for both the community and local wildlife.

Last October, Stephen MacGregor from the Council’s Thriving Green Spaces team attended a meeting of the Currie Community Council to introduce the Living Landscape / Our Nature Estate programme.

The meeting, attended by local councillors and residents, provided a valuable opportunity to discuss ideas on how the greenspace could be enhanced — benefiting the local community while helping biodiversity to thrive.

Following that meeting, a dedicated subcommittee of the community council was formed to focus specifically on their greenspace. Working together, they produced detailed maps of the area and explored how it could meet the needs of local people while creating habitats for wildlife. Over the winter months, the Council’s gardening teams carried out bulb planting to improve the area, alongside ongoing discussions on future management.

By spring, with the start of the grass-cutting season, a clear way forward was agreed on how the greenspace would be maintained. The result is a balanced approach that supports the community’s needs while promoting biodiversity.

In June, Stephen MacGregor met with members of the Currie Community Council and Sue Webber MSP for a walk through the site to see the progress made. They discussed the various cutting methods and planting schemes now in place to support these shared goals.

Thanks go to the Currie Community Council for their dedication and enthusiasm over the past few months, and to the hardworking gardening teams delivering the improvements on the ground. This work is a great example of how Thriving Green Spaces is supporting local communities to shape greenspaces that work for both people and nature.
