Wildlife by month

January

Some of our local wildlife hibernates in winter, like bats, bees and newts!  However, lots of birds migrate to here to escape freezing weather even further north.  The Firth of Forth is a winter home to huge numbers of geese, ducks and wading birds.  In your garden or local park you might even see colourful Waxwings from Scandanavia feeding on berries.  Winter is also a very good time to see mosses and lichens, when they are not hidden beneath other plants.
